The World's Largest Nuclear-powered Icebreaker Arctic Sewer: Dual Reactor

The 22220 Arctic nuclear icebreaker built by Russia was launched at the Baltic shipyard in St Petersburg. It is the world's largest and most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker and was built by the Russian Union Shipbuilding Corporation.

The report said that the ice-breaking vessel is 173.3 meters long and 34 meters wide, with a displacement of 33,540 tons and a load capacity of up to 100,000 tons. It is equipped with two specially designed RITM-200 nuclear reactors, which can remove almost 3 meters of ice and have a service period of 40 years. With a crew of 75, the construction cost is approximately 36.9 billion rubles (approximately US$1,66 roubles) and it is planned to be put into use in 2018.

According to a report by the Japanese diplomatic scholar website June 14, recently Russia has tested the first new type of military icebreaker in half a century. The 6,000-ton "21180 plan" model diesel-powered icebreaker Ilya Muromets was successfully tested on June 10th at the ceremony held at the St. Petersburg Admiralty Shipyard.

According to plan, the icebreaker Ilya Muromets is expected to be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2017. At a ceremony, the chief of the navy shipyard Alexander Buzhkov said: “Today, after five years of disruption, we have a new ship launching a multifunction icebreaker. Symbolic Yes, the 'Lenin' nuclear-powered icebreaker built water on this slipway 60 years ago."

Buzhakov also said that in 2016 "this slipway will also build new vessels for use in the Arctic." Two small frigates in the Arctic zone equipped with cruise missiles that can act as icebreakers are expected to enter the Russian Navy before the end of 2020.

Russia has a fleet of 40 icebreakers and will add 12 new icebreakers in the coming years. About 27 of these are marine icebreakers and some are nuclear-powered icebreakers. Russia also plans to introduce a new class of super nuclear-powered icebreakers by 2020.

The Russian Ministry of National Defense said that the icebreaker, the Ilya Murometz, is 85 meters in length. It is said that it can pierce a 1-metre thick layer of ice and can cross the entire 5,600-kilometre northern channel and can operate autonomously for up to 60 days. There are 35 crew members.
