Avoiding peak hours and crowded spots is essential during the holiday. This year’s Spring Festival runs from January 16 to February 24, spanning 40 days. Officials predict that major highways will see heavy traffic on January 29, 30, 31, and February 5 and 6. In Zhongshan, the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway (Guangao) is expected to handle around 160,000 vehicles daily, while the Shenluo Expressway (Zhongjiang) will see about 80,000 vehicles per day. The Western Coastal Expressway and the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Line are expected to handle 20,000 and 40,000 vehicles respectively, all within capacity limits. To reduce congestion, local drivers are encouraged to avoid traveling during these peak periods.

Police also emphasized the importance of staying informed by checking news, radio, and TV for updates on road conditions and policies. Planning travel routes in advance can significantly improve the driving experience and safety. Drivers should always wear seat belts, which are often referred to as the “life belt” due to their critical role in reducing injuries during accidents. Children should never sit in the front seat and must be secured in appropriate child safety seats in the back. This helps prevent serious injuries during sudden stops or collisions.

It's also important for drivers to take regular breaks—especially after driving for 3 to 4 hours. A 20-minute rest or switching drivers can help prevent fatigue, which is a major cause of accidents. In case of an emergency or accident on the highway, drivers should pull over to the right shoulder, turn on hazard lights, and place a warning triangle at least 150 meters behind the vehicle. They should then call 122 for traffic assistance and 120 for medical help. It's crucial to evacuate passengers to the outside of the guardrail on the right side of the road and avoid standing near the vehicle or remaining inside it to prevent further danger.
