With the Spring Festival holiday and free highway access, many citizens are planning road trips with family and friends. According to a recent interview with the Zhongshan Traffic Police Department, drivers should prepare in advance by carrying a road safety guide and a map of scenic routes. It is essential to plan travel routes carefully, avoid high-traffic areas, and steer clear of peak hours. Additionally, a thorough vehicle inspection should be conducted before departure to ensure all systems—such as tires, brakes, lights, and wipers—are in good working order.
This year’s Spring Festival runs from January 16 to February 24, spanning 40 days. Authorities predict that major highways will see heavy traffic on January 29, 30, 31, and February 5 and 6. In Zhongshan City, during the period from January 31 to February 6, the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway (Guangao) is expected to handle about 160,000 vehicles per day, while the Shenluo Expressway (Zhongjiang) will see around 80,000 vehicles daily. The Western Coastal Expressway and the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Line are expected to handle approximately 20,000 and 40,000 vehicles respectively, which remains within the capacity of these roads. Officials recommend that Zhongshan drivers avoid traveling during peak times if possible.
The Zhongshan Traffic Police also emphasized that drivers should carry maps and guides, plan their routes ahead, and stay updated on traffic conditions through media channels. They advised travelers to avoid crowded areas and busy hours, and to conduct a full vehicle check before heading out. This includes checking tire pressure, brake function, lights, and windshield wipers to prevent mechanical failures on the road.
When it comes to child safety, the department reminded drivers that children should never sit in the front seat. If possible, they should be secured in a child-specific safety seat in the back. Seat belts are considered the “life belt†and should always be worn by all passengers. Drivers who are on long journeys should take regular breaks—every 3 to 4 hours, at least 20 minutes of rest is recommended, or alternate driving with other passengers to avoid fatigue.
In case of an emergency or accident on the highway, drivers should immediately move the vehicle to the right shoulder, turn on hazard lights, and place a warning triangle 150 meters behind the car. They should then call 122 for traffic assistance and 120 for medical help. It's important to evacuate all passengers to the outside of the guardrail on the right side of the road, not to stand near the vehicle or remain inside it, as this can increase the risk of further injury.
