However, the performance of bacterial pesticides is highly dependent on the number and viability of the bacteria, as well as the environmental conditions during application. Temperature plays a crucial role in the success of bacterial pesticide application. The ideal temperature range for spraying is between 20°C and 30°C. This is because the active components of these pesticides include protein crystals and living spores, which require optimal warmth to function effectively. At lower temperatures, spore germination slows down, and the protein crystals may not activate properly. Studies show that bacterial bio-pesticides applied between 25°C and 30°C can be up to 102 times more effective than when used at temperatures below 15°C.
Humidity is another important factor. Higher humidity levels generally enhance the performance of bacterial bio-pesticides, especially those in powder form. Spores are sensitive to dry conditions, so it's best to apply powdered bio-pesticides during early morning or late evening when dew is present. This helps the microbial agents stick better to the leaves, promoting spore germination and improving overall effectiveness.
Sunlight exposure can significantly reduce the viability of spores. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can kill up to 50% of spores within 30 minutes and as much as 80% after one hour. UV light also affects the parasporal crystals, reducing their potency. To avoid this, it’s recommended to apply bacterial pesticides in the late afternoon, after 5 PM, or on overcast days when UV exposure is minimized.
Rainfall also influences the effectiveness of bacterial pesticides. Light rain shortly after application can wash away the pesticide from plant surfaces, reducing its impact. However, if rain occurs 5 hours after application, it may actually help by aiding the spread of the bacteria across the foliage, potentially enhancing the control effect. Therefore, timing and weather conditions are essential considerations when using bacterial bio-pesticides.
