How to use biological pesticides according to climatic conditions

Bacterial pesticides are a type of biological pesticide known for their high effectiveness against pests, environmental safety, and lack of toxicity to humans and animals. Unlike chemical pesticides, they do not lead to pest resistance. However, their efficacy is closely related to the number and activity of the bacteria, as well as the environmental conditions during application. To maximize their performance, several key factors must be considered. Temperature plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of bacterial bio-pesticides. The optimal temperature range for spraying is between 20°C and 30°C. This is because the active components—protein crystals and living spores—are most effective under these conditions. At lower temperatures, spore germination is slow, and the protein crystals may not act effectively. Studies show that the efficacy of bacterial bio-pesticides at 25°C–30°C is up to 102 times higher than at 10°C–15°C, making temperature control essential for success. Humidity is another critical factor. The higher the humidity, the better the performance of bacterial bio-pesticides, especially when using powdered formulations. Spores are sensitive to dry conditions, so it's best to apply them during early morning or late evening when dew is present. This helps the microbial agents stick to the leaves and enhances spore germination, ultimately improving the overall effectiveness of the treatment. Sunlight exposure can significantly impact the viability of spores. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can kill a large percentage of spores. For instance, direct sunlight for 30 minutes can result in about 50% spore mortality, while one hour of exposure can increase this to 80%. UV light also degrades parasporal crystals, reducing their insecticidal potential. Therefore, it’s recommended to apply bacterial pesticides after 5 p.m. or on cloudy days to avoid UV damage. Rainfall can also influence the effectiveness of bacterial pesticides. Light rain may wash away the applied bacteria, reducing their impact. However, if it rains five hours after application, it can actually enhance the effectiveness by helping the bacteria spread more evenly across the plant surface. This synergy makes timing an important consideration when planning pesticide applications.
