Most injection-molded cages are made from polyamide 6,6. However, the mechanical properties of this material can change with temperature, leading to aging over time. Factors like operating temperature, exposure duration, and contact with lubricants all influence the lifespan of the cage. For instance, glass-reinforced polyamide 6,6 is not suitable for temperatures above +70°C, especially in environments where corrosive substances like ammonia are present. To address these challenges, SKF uses glass fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (VICTREX PEEK) in its cages. This material is ideal for high-speed, high-temperature, or chemically aggressive environments, such as in generators, transformers, or compressors. VICTREX PEEK stands out for its exceptional strength, durability, wide temperature range, chemical resistance, and ease of processing. It remains stable even at +200°C and is unaffected by temperature changes or lubricant additives. Thanks to these outstanding properties, VICTREX PEEK cages are well-suited for ball and roller bearings, including precision and custom automotive bearings.
