Mysterious Fruit Morphological Characteristics:
Tree Shape: The mysterious fruit comes from a perennial evergreen shrub that has sparse foliage. This plant can grow up to 2 to 5 meters tall, but it grows very slowly. A four-year-old tree may only reach a height of 60 to 80 cm, with a slightly conical shape. Its branches spread outward, giving it a compact and neat appearance.
Leaves: The leaves are light green when young, gradually turning dark green as they mature. They resemble those of Terminalia tenuifolia, with an inverted lanceolate or obovate shape. Leaves are typically arranged alternately along the branches or trunk. They have about eight pairs of lateral veins and a slightly wavy margin. These leaves are not only ornamental but also usable for making tea.
Flowers: The flowers grow in the axils of the leaves and are small, white blossoms with a diameter of approximately 0.65 to 0.75 cm. They bloom annually for 4 to 6 weeks and emit a subtle fragrance reminiscent of coconut milk. Despite their size, these flowers play a crucial role in the plant’s reproductive cycle.
Fruits: After flowering, the plant produces small, oval-shaped green berries that measure about 2 to 3 cm in length and 1 cm in width. As they ripen, the berries turn bright red, indicating they are ready for harvest.
Seeds: Inside each fruit is a single seed, partially covered by the fleshy pulp. The seed is slightly pointed at both ends, resembling a small olive. The edible pulp surrounding the seed is rich in flavor, while the remaining half is covered by a thin, gelatinous membrane that is difficult to remove. This membrane is often referred to as “yin and yang†due to its contrasting texture and appearance. The seeds themselves are smooth and dark brown, similar to those found in custard apples.
