Industrial bearings are designed to operate for a long time if used properly. However, premature failures can occur due to various factors such as improper installation, incorrect operation, inadequate lubrication, or contamination from external sources. These early damages, which happen before the expected fatigue life, are often referred to as faults or incidents caused by poor application practices.
Common causes include insufficient lubrication, unsuitable oil supply systems, foreign particles entering the bearing, misalignment during installation, and excessive shaft deflection. Additionally, thermal effects from the shaft or housing can also contribute to damage. Understanding these issues is crucial for preventing future problems.
When a bearing fails, it's not always easy to determine the exact cause without proper investigation. However, by analyzing the operating conditions, surrounding structure, and pre- and post-damage status, you can identify multiple potential reasons for the failure and take preventive measures.
**Bearing Identification:**
To determine whether a bearing can still be used, several factors should be considered, including the extent of damage, mechanical performance, importance of the application, working environment, and the next scheduled inspection. If any of the following conditions exist, the bearing should be replaced:
1. Cracks or gaps in the outer ring, rolling elements, or cage.
2. Significant scoring or damage on the raceway, ribs, or rolling elements.
3. Severe wear on the cage or loose rivets.
4. Rust or surface damage on the raceway or rolling elements.
5. Deep indentations or marks on the raceway or rolling elements.
6. Noticeable creep on the inner or outer diameter surfaces.
7. Obvious color changes due to overheating.
8. Damaged seals or dust covers on grease-sealed bearings.
By carefully inspecting these aspects, you can make an informed decision about the bearing’s usability and ensure safe and efficient operation.
