Do a Good Job of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to Promote Disaster Relief

On April 12th, during the fourth "Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day" in China, Hui Liangyu, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Vice Premier of the State Council, and Director of the National Disaster Reduction Committee, attended a large-scale comprehensive disaster relief exercise jointly organized by Sichuan Province and the National Disaster Reduction Commission Office in Chengdu. The drill aimed to test and enhance the country’s capacity to respond to natural disasters. Hui emphasized that disaster prevention and mitigation are crucial for protecting people's lives and property, as well as for ensuring sustainable economic and social development. He called for a stronger promotion of the spirit of disaster resistance and resilience, advocating for a people-centered approach with a focus on prevention and integrated response strategies. By leveraging this exercise and the annual Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day, he urged further improvements in early warning systems, risk management, emergency preparedness, and public awareness campaigns. The drill, which lasted over four hours, showcased a wide range of scenarios, including earthquake rescue operations, mass evacuation, geological disaster relief, and the handling of barrier lakes. More than 10,000 personnel from the Sichuan Military Region, Armed Police Forces, and local communities participated, supported by over 800 pieces of equipment. The exercise highlighted the progress made in recent years in disaster preparedness and response capabilities across Sichuan. Hui praised the drill for its thorough preparation, rich content, and innovative format. He noted the strong collaboration between government agencies, military units, and the public, as well as the multi-level coordination and cross-border rescue efforts involving land, air, and water. This demonstration not only reflected the achievements in disaster management but also served as a model for other regions to follow. Looking ahead, Hui stressed the importance of strengthening disaster monitoring, improving early warning systems, managing hidden risks, and enhancing emergency support. He also called for greater investment in disaster prevention infrastructure and the promotion of disaster prevention education in schools, communities, and families. With global climate change increasing the frequency of extreme weather events and seismic activity entering an active phase, the need for robust disaster prevention and mitigation strategies has never been more urgent. Through continuous improvement and public engagement, China aims to build a safer and more resilient society.
