Low child safety car seat usage

A few days ago, a tragic incident in Zhejiang sparked renewed concern about child safety in vehicles. A mother who took her child to sit in the front passenger seat caused a fatal accident when the airbag deployed. Had a child safety seat been used instead, the child might still be safe in their parents’ arms today. This incident highlights the urgent need for awareness and proper use of child car seats. Child safety seats: low awareness, high risk On the morning of December 6, a reporter visited an elementary school in Xicheng District, Beijing. Many parents were driving their children to school, but out of nearly 30 vehicles observed, only a few had child safety seats. Most children were sitting in the front seat. When asked if they used child safety seats, many parents hesitated, claiming they always drove carefully and never had an accident. In a nearby kindergarten, only two parents had installed safety seats, and one of them still had the child in the front seat. Experienced traffic police emphasize that accidents can happen suddenly, regardless of how careful a driver is. Proper use of child safety seats significantly reduces injury risk during collisions. However, many parents still believe it’s unnecessary or think it’s safer to have the child sit in the back. This is a dangerous misconception. Parents should always prioritize safety and ensure their children are properly restrained. The development of child safety seats has spanned over half a century, yet in China, the usage rate remains extremely low—less than 1% nationwide. In Guangzhou, only 47% of car owners use child seats, which is still far below the desired level. Encouraging broader adoption remains a major challenge for drivers across the country. In many developed countries like the U.S., Europe, and Japan, child restraint systems are standard in vehicles. These regions have strict regulations such as FMVSS 213 in the U.S., ECE R44 in Europe, and TRIAS 51-1999 in Japan, all ensuring child safety during travel. In foreign films, it's common to see children safely seated in child safety seats. China’s vehicle growth rate surpasses many developed nations, but the use of child safety seats has not kept up. Every year, more than 18,500 children under 14 are killed or injured in traffic accidents. The mortality rate is 2.5 times higher than in Europe and 2.6 times higher than in the U.S. Traffic accidents are now the leading cause of death among children under 14. As private car ownership rises, so does the risk of these tragic incidents. On July 1, 2012, China introduced its first national standard for child restraint systems, based on European guidelines. This was the first mandatory regulation in China aimed at improving child safety in vehicles. The standard covers everything from installation and fixation to performance testing and structural requirements. It also sets specific rules for different weight groups, emphasizing that adult seat belts cannot replace child safety seats. All forward-facing restraints must include anti-slip devices to prevent injury during sudden stops or collisions. As the number of cars continues to grow, it’s time for parents and drivers to take child safety seriously. Investing in a child safety seat could save a life. Let’s make every journey a safer one for our children. China Labor Insurance Network
