IMEC, a leading Belgian research institute, and Meco, a Dutch supplier of electroplating equipment, have introduced a new large-area (156 x 156 mm²) i-PERC-type solar cell that is not only suitable for solar energy applications but also features industrial-grade nickel/copper front contact plating technology. This innovation represents a significant step forward in the development of high-efficiency photovoltaic cells.
The performance of the nickel/copper plated cells was verified by Fraunhofer ISE CalLab, where they were tested on PZ-CZ-Si material. The results showed an average efficiency of 20.5% and a peak efficiency of 20.7%. According to Jozef Szlufcik, director of IMEC’s crystalline silicon photovoltaics division, these outcomes mark a substantial improvement over conventional screen-printed PERC cells. “Our cost of ownership analysis also shows a clear financial advantage,†he added. “This technology demonstrates that nickel/copper plating can enhance the efficiency of PERC cells while significantly lowering production costs.â€
The cells were fabricated using IMEC’s solar cell pilot line, with the nickel/copper front contacts applied via Meco’s in-line plating system. The metallization process involved several key steps, including UV laser ablation, sequential in-line plating of the metal layers, and contact annealing. This advanced approach ensures better electrical performance and long-term reliability, making it a promising solution for next-generation solar modules.
This breakthrough highlights the potential of nickel/copper plating as a game-changing technology in the photovoltaic industry, offering both performance and cost benefits that could drive wider adoption in the future.
