Glufosinate, also known as glufosinate ammonium, has several common Chinese names including: 2-amino-4-(hydroxy(methyl)phosphonyl)butyrate; (RS)-2-amino-4-(hydroxyl)ammonium methoxide, ammonium butyrate; glufosinate; 4-[hydroxy(methyl)phosphonoyl]-DL-homoalanine; and Basta. To help farmers apply this pesticide more effectively, the following key characteristics of glufosinate as a herbicide in China are highlighted:
1. Glufosinate is highly efficient, low in toxicity, and environmentally friendly. It offers a safer alternative for weed control without harming crops or the surrounding ecosystem.
2. Research has shown that it requires only 0.40 kg per hectare to manage annual weeds, while 1.00–2.00 kg per hectare is sufficient for controlling perennial weeds. This makes it effective against a wide range of broadleaf, grassy, and sedge weeds. It is commonly used in orchards, vineyards, and non-cultivated areas. In the United States, it is marketed under the brand name Liberty and is widely applied in cotton, cereals, sugar beets, nuts, grapes, citrus, rubber, turf, and ornamental crops.
3. Glufosinate is an excellent herbicide that works well with resistance genes. Over 20 crops, such as rice, wheat, corn, sugar beet, tobacco, soybean, cotton, potato, tomato, canola, sugarcane, and others, have been genetically modified to tolerate glufosinate. The LibertyLink system covers most major crops, including soybeans, corn, canola, sugar beets, potatoes, cotton, and rice. These genetically modified crops are not only widely cultivated in North America but are also gaining traction in Asia, Australia, and parts of Europe due to increasing acceptance of biotechnology in agriculture.
4. With high activity, a broad spectrum of action, and versatile application, glufosinate is a popular choice among farmers. Its ability to target multiple weed species across various crops makes it a valuable tool in modern agriculture.
5. Glufosinate complements glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides globally. While glyphosate is economical at over 30,000 yuan per ton, it struggles with certain persistent perennial weeds. Glufosinate addresses this gap, offering effective control over weeds resistant to glyphosate. Despite its higher price—up to 300,000 yuan per ton—it remains a viable option in high-value crops where weed management is critical. Its market potential continues to grow as demand for sustainable and effective weed control solutions increases.
