Sumitomo Electric and Tongji University to Develop Public Traffic Priority Control System

With the rapid growth of vehicle ownership, traffic congestion has become a major challenge in China's large cities. This not only causes daily inconvenience but also worsens environmental issues, particularly air pollution and rising carbon dioxide emissions. In response to this growing problem, Sumitomo Electric Industries Co., Ltd. has partnered with Tongji University to develop an advanced public transportation priority control system. The goal is to enhance the efficiency and reliability of bus travel, making it a more attractive option for commuters. In October 2013, a pilot experiment was conducted on a highway in Taicang City, Jiangsu Province, to test the effectiveness of the system in improving traffic flow and giving priority to public transport. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Chinese authorities to manage urban mobility through various strategies, including expanding road networks and implementing vehicle restrictions. However, one of the most promising approaches is to improve public transportation services and encourage people to choose buses over private cars. The new bus priority control system combines Sumitomo Electric’s advanced traffic management technology with Tongji University’s expertise in bus prioritization. It uses signal controllers, vehicle sensors, and wireless communication devices to detect approaching buses and adjust traffic lights accordingly—extending green lights or shortening red lights to allow buses to pass smoothly. This integration aims to reduce delays and increase the overall efficiency of public transit. Sumitomo Electric and Tongji University aim to complete the joint development of the system by the end of March 2014. Based on the results of the field experiments in Taicang, they will evaluate the potential for commercial deployment. The project was also showcased at the "Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Conference Tokyo 2013," held from October 15 to 18 at the Tokyo Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center, highlighting the importance of smart transportation solutions in modern urban environments.
