The National Fire Protection Standardization Technical Committee's Fireproof Materials Subcommittee has taken charge of managing the standard, with the Sichuan Institute of Fire Research under the Ministry of Public Security responsible for revising the mandatory national standard GB 8624-2012 titled "Comprehensive Combustion Performance of Building Materials and Products." This updated standard has now been officially released by the National Standardization Management Committee and will come into effect on October 1, 2013.
This new version replaces the previous GB 8624-2006 standard, which was titled "Classification of Combustion Performance of Building Materials and Products." The main updates include a revised classification system for combustion performance levels, enhanced criteria for specific product types, and additional information related to combustion performance ratings and identification. These changes aim to improve fire safety in real-world construction applications, reduce potential fire risks, and ensure better regulation across the industry.
In addition to GB 8624-2012, the recommended national standard GB/T 29416-2012, "Test Method for Fire Performance of Exterior Wall Insulation Systems for Buildings," has also been issued. This complementary standard provides essential guidelines for evaluating the fire resistance of insulation systems used in exterior walls, further supporting safer building practices.
To ensure the effective implementation of GB 8624-2012 and to enhance understanding of GB/T 29416-2012, the Fireproof Material Subcommittee of the National Fire Protection Standardization Technical Committee, in collaboration with the National Fireproofing Material Inspection Center, recently organized a public meeting and seminar focused on these two standards. The event aimed to clarify the requirements, promote compliance, and raise awareness among professionals involved in the construction and fire safety sectors.
With the introduction of these updated standards, the construction industry is expected to see improved safety measures, more consistent quality control, and better alignment with national fire protection policies. This development marks a significant step forward in ensuring that building materials and products meet rigorous fire performance criteria, ultimately contributing to safer buildings and communities.
