When the inner ring of a bearing is tightly fitted with the shaft, and the outer ring is loosely coupled with the housing bore in a non-removable assembly, it's recommended to first mount the bearing on the shaft. Once mounted, the shaft along with the bearing can then be inserted into the housing. For smaller bearings, you may use a soft metal hammer to gently tap the end face of the bearing ring, ensuring even force distribution across the ring to avoid damage. In cases where the outer ring is tightly fitted with the housing bore, while the inner ring remains loosely coupled with the shaft, the bearing should be installed on the shaft first. When either the inner or outer ring is tightly engaged with the shaft or housing, it’s essential to use a special sleeve tool to press the bearing into place. For separable bearings, installation is more straightforward since both the inner and outer rings can be removed easily. However, care must be taken during installation—ensure that the shaft, once placed inside the inner ring, is smoothly inserted into the housing with the outer ring already in place. Maintaining concentricity is crucial to prevent any damage to the rolling elements or raceways. When dealing with larger bearings, or when the fit requires significant force due to heavy-duty applications, cold mounting may not be practical. In such situations, it’s advisable to heat the inner ring or the bearing housing before installation. The heating temperature must be carefully controlled—never exceeding 120°C, typically ranging between 80–100°C. Bearings with dust covers or seals should not be heated, as this could lead to lubricant loss. Common heating methods include electric induction, oil bath, or other safe techniques.
