Jasmine is a semi-evergreen shrub known for its beautiful, fragrant white flowers that bloom in cymes at the tips. It typically flowers from summer through autumn, making it a popular choice for both garden and indoor cultivation. In southern regions, jasmine can be planted directly in the yard, while in northern areas, it’s best grown in pots. When growing jasmine in pots, it's important to repot it every one to two years in early spring. The ideal potting mix consists of humus soil and sandy loam, with a small amount of crushed cake fertilizer and bone meal added as a base. During repotting, trim the branches to about 15 cm in length, removing any excess growth. Also, cut away dense, diseased, dead, or old branches to encourage new growth and more flower buds.
After spring ends in the north, it's essential to provide shade from direct sunlight. Watering should follow the "see dry and wet" principle—only water when the soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot. As summer approaches, gradually increase the watering frequency. During hot days, water the plant 1–2 times daily and mist the leaves 2–3 times a day to maintain humidity. Insufficient water or low humidity can negatively affect growth and flowering. Starting in late September, reduce watering to help the plant harden off and prepare for winter. In winter, keep the soil slightly moist but avoid overwatering.
A 0.2% solution of ferrous sulfate should be applied every 10–14 days during the growing season to maintain an acidic soil environment. This helps promote lush, healthy foliage and large, fragrant blooms. Jasmine benefits from regular fertilization. From the start of spring until the end of September, apply a diluted cake fertilizer every 7–14 days. During the bud stage, use a phosphorus-rich liquid fertilizer to support flower development. Stop fertilizing from early October onwards to allow the plant to rest.
Before the first frost, bring the potted jasmine indoors to a sunny location. Ensure proper ventilation by opening windows frequently to prevent leaf yellowing. Maintain a room temperature above 10°C during winter. Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C can cause leaf drop. With proper care, your jasmine will thrive and reward you with beautiful, fragrant blossoms year after year.
