The Japanese Aerospace and Industrial Technology Agency (JAITA), based in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, has partnered with a leading fastener manufacturer in Kanto to develop an innovative technology that integrates micro-mechanical components, mechanical structures, and electronic circuits directly into bolts. This groundbreaking system allows for wireless monitoring of bolt tightness and potential damage after installation, offering real-time data on the structural integrity of critical connections.
JAITA envisions this technology being widely used in high-stakes safety applications such as aircraft, automobiles, and precision engineering components. The development is expected to significantly enhance the management of bolt tightening processes, bringing about a new era of smart and reliable fastening systems.
Since 2006, JAITA has been actively researching systems capable of monitoring bolt tightness and damage. Their efforts have included testing the ability to detect issues in fastening components on artificial satellites orbiting beyond Earth’s atmosphere. By embedding their proprietary MEMS "axial force sensor" into bolts, they can measure the load applied to each fastener. If any irregularity is detected, the sensor can instantly transmit the data wirelessly to the satellite's onboard system. Ground control centers can then quickly identify which bolt is malfunctioning and access detailed information through real-time monitoring.
This advancement not only improves maintenance efficiency but also enhances safety by enabling early detection of potential failures. As the technology matures, it could revolutionize how industries manage critical connections, ensuring greater reliability and reducing the risk of catastrophic failure in vital systems.
