Laminated safety glass was first introduced by automakers in 1927, commonly referred to as automotive glass or windshields. This type of glass is made by combining two or more layers of float glass with a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) film in between. The PVB layer acts as a strong adhesive that holds the glass together even if it breaks, preventing sharp fragments from flying out. Unlike regular glass, laminated glass is more resistant to penetration and can stretch slightly before breaking. This makes it ideal for applications where safety is a priority, such as bullet-resistant windows.
In addition to its safety features, laminated safety glass offers two other benefits: it helps reduce the transmission of high-frequency sounds, making it useful in noise-sensitive environments, and it blocks up to 97% of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, providing additional protection against sun damage.
This type of glass is widely used in various settings, including thermometers, cutting boards, greenhouse windows, bathroom enclosures, office partitions, and more. It’s also highly durable and less likely to shatter during natural disasters like earthquakes or tornadoes, making it a reliable choice for both residential and commercial applications.
On the other hand, tempered safety glass is manufactured through a process of heating and rapid cooling, which increases its strength significantly—up to five to ten times stronger than regular glass. When broken, it doesn’t produce sharp shards like ordinary glass. Instead, it shatters into small, rounded pieces that are much safer and less likely to cause injury. Tempered glass is commonly used in car side and rear windows due to its durability and safety profile.
Tempered safety glass finds application in a variety of everyday products, such as computer monitors, LCD screens, sunroofs, refrigerator shelves, oven doors, and other household appliances where impact resistance is essential. Its versatility and strength make it a popular choice in both industrial and consumer settings.
