The incandescent bulb was one of the first practical and mature electric light sources, operating on the principle that a filament, when heated by an electric current, emits visible light. Despite its simplicity, this technology has some drawbacks—such as low luminous efficiency and a relatively short lifespan—but it was revolutionary in its time for being easy to use and widely available.
Humans have been using incandescent bulbs for over a century and a half. When we think of these lights, the name Thomas Edison often comes to mind. He spent years experimenting with various materials to find the perfect filament. After testing more than 6,000 substances, he finally settled on carbon filaments. His first working lamp lasted about 45 hours before the filament burned out. Through continuous improvements, both by Edison and later inventors, the incandescent bulb eventually reached a lifespan of over 3,000 hours, making it a household staple for decades.
The development of incandescent lighting also benefited from the work of scientists like Irving Langmuir, who studied the interaction between gases and metal surfaces. This research helped make incandescent lamps more practical and efficient. Meanwhile, William Coolidge and other researchers at General Electric developed techniques to produce durable tungsten filaments, which significantly improved the performance of these bulbs. By filling the glass envelope with inert gases, they reduced heat loss and prevented the blackening of the bulb’s inner surface, further extending its life.
While Edison's invention of the incandescent lamp marked a major milestone in human history, bringing light to homes around the world, modern alternatives like fluorescent and LED bulbs are far more energy-efficient and longer-lasting. Incandescent lamps consume more electricity, generate more heat, and have a shorter lifespan compared to their modern counterparts. As a result, many countries have phased them out to reduce energy consumption and protect the environment. Although we still honor Edison’s contributions, it’s time to move forward and embrace more sustainable lighting solutions.
