Currently, the acoustic tubes used in the market are mainly made of steel pipes, bellows, and plastic pipes. Each material has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to choose the most suitable one based on specific application requirements.
Bellows are among the most widely used materials for acoustic tubes due to their lightweight, high flexibility, and excellent pressure resistance. They combine the benefits of both steel and plastic tubes, offering good strength and impermeability. When installing a bellows-type acoustic tube, it can be easily tied to the reinforcing cage and connected using splices. However, care must be taken to ensure the axis remains straight during installation to avoid any misalignment.
Steel pipes are another common choice, especially where durability and structural integrity are important. They can be directly welded, making the installation process straightforward. Their rigid structure ensures that they maintain parallelism and straightness even after being embedded in concrete. However, steel pipes tend to be more expensive compared to other options.
Plastic acoustic tubes are often used in smaller cast-in-place piles because of their high sound transmission efficiency. However, they come with certain limitations. Due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between plastic and concrete, plastic tubes may shrink after the concrete hardens, leading to potential gaps between the tube and the surrounding concrete. These gaps can create reflective surfaces, increasing the chances of false readings during testing. Therefore, plastic tubes are typically not recommended for large-scale piles where significant amounts of concrete are involved.
When selecting the right acoustic tube material, factors such as cost, installation ease, environmental conditions, and long-term performance should all be considered. Choosing the appropriate material ensures accurate results and avoids unnecessary complications during testing.
