The western development strategy is gaining momentum, and a new chapter is being written in the hardware industry. In recent years, especially in Sichuan and Chongqing, the region has become a hotbed for investment as China restructures its economic landscape. Major global players like the German Bosch Group and the Swedish bearing giant SKF have taken notice, eyeing the opportunities that this emerging market presents. Their presence is not just symbolic — it's driving a transformation in the hardware sector, setting the stage for a fresh wave of growth.
The Chinese government has long viewed the development of the western region as a strategic priority. The goal is to leverage the economic strengths of the eastern coastal areas and channel them toward the underdeveloped west, aiming to improve overall living standards and strengthen national defense. In 2012, during the release of the 12th Five-Year Plan, officials from the National Development and Reform Commission outlined clear directions for this initiative, signaling a stronger commitment to regional balance.
As the country continues to open up the west, companies with keen business instincts, such as Bosch and SKF, are rushing in. These global leaders understand that the western region isn't just about low costs — it's about access to a growing market, favorable policies, and a rising talent pool.
Bosch, for instance, has made Chengdu a key hub for its operations in China. The company invested over $137 million (about 880 million yuan) in the Chengdu Economic Development Zone, establishing its second chassis control system production base and R&D center in the country. This facility is now the largest in China for Bosch. The company then followed up with a project worth 2 billion yuan annually and added more investments in 2012, including a power tools production base and an R&D center for packaging in the Southwest, totaling 120 million yuan. Over the course of a year, Bosch delivered three major projects to Chengdu in quick succession — a rare occurrence in the company’s international investment history.
Meanwhile, SKF, the world’s leading bearing manufacturer, chose Chongqing as its southwest headquarters. Located in the Liangjiang New Area, the decision was driven by the city's strong industrial base, including automotive, CNC machinery, and electrical equipment sectors, as well as the area's favorable policies and tax incentives. The Liangjiang New Area is the only national-level new development zone in inland China, offering substantial support to foreign enterprises.
With more industries entering the western market, the region is sending a strong signal of opportunity and growth. Sichuan and Chongqing, particularly Chengdu, are showing great potential. As an engine city for western development, Chengdu offers not only economic strength but also a vibrant innovation ecosystem, rich cultural heritage, and top-tier government services. It was even chosen as the venue for the 2013 "Fortune" Global Forum. In Chongqing, Nanchuan District is actively building a high-tech hardware production base, with a 400-million-yuan fastener project currently underway.
Moreover, large-scale hardware and electrical markets such as Wan Guan Hardware & Electrical City, Jinfu Hardware & Electrical City, and others have already established themselves in Chengdu, creating a powerful industrial cluster effect. Companies from both domestic and international backgrounds are setting up shop here, further boosting the region's appeal.
With the continued push from the national strategy and the influence of these leading hardware firms, Sichuan and Chongqing are quickly becoming the new growth engines of China's hardware industry. The future looks bright for this once-underdeveloped region, and the signs are all pointing to a dynamic and prosperous era ahead.
