Today marks a monumental achievement for two of Pittsburgh's most respected institutions as MECCO and Robert Morris University were honored with a prestigious Carnegie Science Award in the Exemplary Educational/Corporate Collaboration category. The Carnegie Science Awards, hosted annually by the Carnegie Science Center, celebrate trailblazers in science, technology, and education across western Pennsylvania. The collaboration, spearheaded by RMU Associate Professor Ben Campbell, has yielded impressive results. Together, they’ve developed flexible experimental welding platforms, established protocols for measuring weld strength, explored novel plastic welding techniques, and created thermal models to prevent damage during the process. They even designed a versatile test vessel to assess various material properties.
Professor Campbell remarked, "This research has equipped us with tools to showcase welding processes while deepening our understanding of practical applications. It’s gratifying to see students gain valuable skills, engage in meaningful industry research, and learn to address customer-driven problems."
The recognition extends beyond the achievements themselves. It underscores the importance of collaboration between corporations and universities in fueling regional growth.
