New type of toilet capable of producing electricity to produce fertilizer: one-tenth of the amount of water used in traditional toilets

According to the report of the Physicist Organization Network on June 27th, scientists from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore invented a new type of toilet system that can not only convert toilet waste into electricity and fertilizer, but also save 90% of water compared to traditional flush toilets.

This type of toilet is known as a non-hybrid vacuum toilet. It has two compartments that separate liquid and solid waste. The system uses a vacuum suction technology similar to aircraft toilets, flushing liquids and solid waste with only 0.2 liters and 1 litre, respectively. However, the existing conventional flush toilets require 4 to 6 liters of water per flush. Take public toilets as an example. If you flush 100 times a day, with this new technology, a toilet will save 160,000 liters of water per year. This water is sufficient to fill a 10-meter-long, 8-meter-wide, 2-meter deep swimming pool. .

Associate Professor Wang Jingyuan, director of the Waste Resource Research Center at Nanyang Technological University responsible for the project, said that their ultimate goal is not only to save water, but to form a complete circulatory system, so that all resources can be recycled and used. This is of great significance to the lack of Singapore.

Wang Jingyuan said: "Because of the high cost and energy consumption of processing mixed waste, the separation technology used in this new type of system can significantly reduce the cost of processing toilet waste. With this new type of toilet system, we can not only use simpler and cheaper The method of harvesting useful chemicals can even turn these toilet wastes into fuel and energy.”

It is understood that this non-hybrid vacuum toilet can convert liquid waste into nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other recoverable substances. At the same time, solid waste will react in the bioreactor and release methane containing methane. These methane can be used as fuel or directly converted into electricity through power plants and fuel cells.

Currently, the project has received financial support from the National Research Foundation of Singapore and its results are expected to be applied in Singapore's new residential areas, hotels and resorts. Since this type of toilet is a closed loop system and does not discharge waste to the environment, it is particularly suitable for buildings without sewage treatment systems or municipal pipelines. Scientists at Nanyang Technological University have begun using this technology to transform two bathrooms on campus to experiment with their reliability. If all goes well, people are expected to experience this new energy saving and environmental protection technology in the next three years. (Wang Xiaolong)
