Japan is leading the way in developing artificial light synthesis technology, a groundbreaking innovation that could revolutionize how we harness and use energy. According to recent reports, the amount of solar energy that reaches Earth every minute is enough to power human activities for an entire year. While plants have naturally been converting sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into organic matter and oxygen through photosynthesis, scientists are now trying to replicate this process artificially.
With 70% of the Earth's surface covered by water and increasing levels of carbon dioxide contributing to global warming, researchers see a unique opportunity. By combining solar energy, water, and carbon dioxide, it's possible to create sustainable chemical raw materials such as methanol and ethylene—resources that could be used indefinitely. This concept has sparked significant interest, especially in Japan, where major companies and research institutions are making remarkable progress.
In December of last year, Matsushita Corporation successfully conducted experiments using outdoor sunlight to produce formic acid, marking a key milestone in artificial light synthesis. Then, in May this year, the Central Research Institute under Toyota Motor Group also completed similar experiments outdoors, achieving the same result. These developments highlight the growing potential of this technology.
According to Panasonic R&D, the team has managed to produce ethanol, methanol, ethylene, and methane by improving the photosynthesis catalyst. However, the current production volume is still limited, with only about 0.2% of sunlight being converted into usable energy. The company aims to increase this efficiency to 1% by 2016, signaling a step closer to practical application.
The importance of this technology hasn’t gone unnoticed. Nobel Prize-winning economist Nobuyuki Genkie has publicly supported its development, emphasizing that for a resource-scarce country like Japan, investing in artificial light synthesis is crucial. Prof. Kenji Uchiyama has also pushed for government support, leading to the establishment of artificial light synthesis as a national strategic project.
In November last year, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology jointly announced a plan to invest 15 billion yen (about RMB 900 million) over the next decade to advance this technology. Their goal is to raise the solar energy conversion efficiency to 10% by 2021.
The concept of artificial light synthesis was first introduced by Professor Shinobu Miyoshi from Osaka City University. Professor Kamiya, who has been actively involved in the field, noted that while challenges remain—such as reducing costs and scaling up equipment—researchers are working on new catalysts to make the technology more viable by 2030.
He also pointed out that countries like the U.S., Europe, China, and South Korea are likely to catch up in the coming years. However, if Japan can achieve breakthroughs first, it could maintain a competitive edge, driving not only an energy revolution but also sustained economic growth.
