Preparation and tribological properties of fluorinated graphene from Lanzhou Institute of Materials

As a new derivative of graphene, fluorinated graphene (FG) not only maintains the high strength and high temperature resistance of graphene, but also introduces a new type of fluorine atom, which has reduced the surface energy and strong hydrophobicity. Physical and chemical properties, which make it a promising application in the new micro-nanoelectronic devices, biomedicine, and lubricant materials.

Under the continuous funding of the "100-Year Plan" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the "Outstanding Youth Fund" of Gansu Province, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (51375474), the Research Group of the State Key Laboratory of Solid Lubrication, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Jinqing His long-term commitment to FG preparation, modification and assembly, and tribological properties have resulted in a series of research results.

The research group used fluorinated graphite as a carbon source, and developed a method for preparing fluorinated graphene by liquid-phase ultrasonic stripping and processing and modifying fluorinated graphene using mixed alkali (NaOH and KOH). The related work was published in RSC Adv. (2012, 2, 11681-11686), J. Mater. Chem. (2012, 22, 16950-16956) and Nanoscale (2014, 6, 3316-3324). At the same time, a process for preparing oxygen-fluorine co-doped fluorinated graphene by fluorinating photo-catalytic fluorination, hydrothermal fluorination, and pyrolysis of fluorinated graphite, respectively, using graphene oxide as a carbon source, and the obtained fluorine Graphene has good water solubility and stability. Some of the results were published in RSC Adv. (2013, 3, 6327-6330) and Carbon (2012, 50, 5403-5410; 2014, 72, 176-184). In addition, in view of the huge application prospects of fluorinated graphene quantum dots in the field of biomedicine but very difficult preparation, the idea of ​​preparation of fluorinated graphene at the expense of some fluorine atoms was proposed, and a nucleophilic substitution reaction was designed. Combined with the subsequent processes of mixed acid ultrasonication and hydrothermal treatment, the fluorinated graphene of micron-sized large sheets was successfully cut into fluorinated graphene quantum dots with a size of 3 to 5 nm. Some of the work was published on Carbon (2015, 83, 152-161) and Mater. Lett. (2015, 143, 112-115).

The research on the tribological properties of FG proves that FG can be used as a lubricating oil additive to enhance the antifriction and antiwear properties of the base oil RSC Adv. (2014, 4, 56543-56551), and can also be used as a construction unit for lubricating films. Tribol. Lett. (2015, 60, 1-12) was assembled, and it was found that the higher the F content of the sample is, the better the anti-friction and anti-wear performance thereof is. At the same time, the FG nanosheets as polymer fillers can also be used to enhance the mechanical properties, thermal stability and tribological properties of polyimides. Related work was published in Composites: Part A (2015, 75, 96-103; 2016, 81 282-288). In addition, the use of urea FG modified and obtained UFG can be dispersed in water; as a new type of water-based additives, UFG also showed some friction in the water anti-wear performance, the relevant work published in ACS Appl.
