New technology allows coalbed methane to become "new" in energy

"China is a very rich coal country and the world's largest coal producer, so China's CBM resources are also very abundant. The CBM geological resources are basically the same as conventional natural gas geological resources. China's CBM resources account for about the world's total. The 13%, second only to Russia and Canada, ranked third." A few days ago, Zhuo Chuang Wang Xiaokun, an information gas analyst, said in an interview with reporters.

Coalbed methane, commonly known as "gas," is mainly composed of combustible gas methane, which is stored in the coal seam of a coal mine. It is a gas resource associated with coal and symbiotic, and is an unconventional natural gas. In the process of coal mining, if there is a slight inadequacy in gas treatment, it will cause a mine disaster; if it is removed from the coal seam with a new technology, it can be turned into a benefit gas and become an alternative gas for natural gas.

In the Qinshui Basin in Shanxi Province, this 28,000-square-kilometer basin contains 10.8% CBM. It may be based on this that in the planning done by the Energy Bureau in late 2011, it was clearly proposed that two large CBM industrialization bases should be built in the Qinshui Basin and another coal-bed methane enrichment area, the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin.

Among the large companies that develop coalbed methane in the Qinshui Basin, the Greco Group is one of them. In 1997, Greenk, together with four other foreign companies, signed a product sharing agreement for six blocks with China Unicom, the only company with exclusive rights to CBM. Since then, the Greco Group has started the development of CBM in China.

"The geological conditions of CBM in China are more complex than expected. Capital investment is more than expected, and it takes longer than expected." Randy Greve, chairman and chief executive officer of Greco Group, said.

In the area developed by Greck at that time, because the coal seam was unevenly distributed under the surface of the earth, the direction of the coal seam was not continuous. When the horizontal well was drilled, if the drilled well could not walk along the coal seam, it might hit the rock. The wells that were shot were only water and no gas. Moreover, as a non-conventional natural gas, coalbed methane is similar in some respects to shale gas, and there is no general mining technology, and mining techniques for different geological conditions are also not the same.

Under such circumstances, despite having a relatively good technical foundation abroad, Greg has to concentrate on researching mining technologies suitable for China. “In the early stages of development, we have drawn a lot of professional and technical personnel from our own companies in the United States. We have expanded the number of technical staff through technical training. Later, we invited a lot of technical experts from Australia to support it, because Australia is the second largest global coalbed methane development. Mature and advanced countries.” Randy Grevo told reporters that the research process took 10 years.

Until 2008, which was the tenth year after Grecker entered the Chinese market, its developed LiFaBric drilling technology (screening technology in the fragile coal seam) succeeded in overcoming the complex difficulties of China's coal seam geology. This technology is to drill the horizontal branch of the well directly in the coal seam, and is not affected by the uneven distribution of the coal seam. The drill can meet the fault and can successfully cross and can follow the direction of the coal seam to ensure that all wells are hit in the coal seam. After the drilling, put the screen down again to prevent the coal seam from collapsing.

It is understood that this horizontal butting technology requires only one well site to drill more than 1 km. Unlike other technologies, it requires the construction of multiple wells to drill vertical wells. The technology is small in area and free from pollution. Chemicals are not used throughout the drilling and completion process. Therefore, the pollution to coal seams is almost zero. In addition, the PVC screens used in this technology will not affect the future coal mining. After the horizontal wells are completed, the occupied wells can be reclaimed, greatly reducing the use of land. (Text Gikon)
