The compact, versatile design of the new static var compensator enables a hybrid solution for direct, transformerless grid connections with system voltages up to 69 kV. Direct connections save significant investment in terms of transformers, municipal work and space requirements.
“ABB's latest generation of lightweight static var compensators is based on a modular, multilevel converter topology to achieve higher transmission efficiencies. With improved voltage control, the new design reduces losses and harmonic interference. Improved performance," said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB's power system substation business.
Compared to previous versions, the new technology offers a wider dynamic range and greater flexibility due to the modular and scalable design of the converter. The number of modules in each phase can be adjusted to optimally match rated power, redundancy, and reliability requirements.
