China will enter the ranks of the world’s major nuclear power countries to legislate to ensure the safety of nuclear power

According to a Hong Kong Wen Wei Po report, Zhang Huazhu, chairman of the China Nuclear Energy Industry Association, revealed recently that in order to ensure the safety of nuclear power, the state will adopt various measures to promote the safety of nuclear power, including plans to establish the “Atomic Energy Law” and promote technological improvement and management innovation.

In recent years, China’s nuclear power industry has developed rapidly, but it has always lacked a basic law in the field of nuclear power. According to Zhang Huazhu, the current "Atomic Energy Law" has been listed in the State Council's legislative work plan for 2011. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Defense Industry and Technology Bureau, the China Nuclear Energy Industry Association will be responsible for the drafting of legal texts and drafting instructions.

Zhang Huazhuo said that the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan has caused widespread concern in the world, and the nuclear safety issue has also been highly valued by the State Council and the State Council. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the association will actively promote nuclear power plant operation assessment and nuclear power project construction project assessment, continue to carry out safety production training and quality assurance training, and promote the safe development of the nuclear energy industry.

Zhang Huazhu believes that the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan will not stop the development of global nuclear power, and will promote the cooperation and exchanges among nuclear power counterparts in various countries so that nuclear power security will build on a new and more solid foundation. It is precisely because of the painful lessons and experience and feedback from the accidents in the United States and the Chernobyl accident in the former Soviet Union that promoted the technological improvement and management innovation of the globally operating nuclear power plants over the past 20 years, as well as the development and application of new nuclear power technologies.

Zhang Huazhu also revealed that during the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s total installed nuclear power capacity will exceed 40 million kilowatts. In terms of operating nuclear power, it will enter the ranks of the world's nuclear power.
