The UNCTAD and the World Trade Organization's co-organizer, the International Trade Center, released a report on the 6th that the development of standards and rules may pose a resistance to corporate exports. Compared with large enterprises, SME exports are more affected.
According to the annual report entitled “2016 SME Competitiveness Outlook”, for every 10% increase in the burden of foreign trade standards, the export value of large enterprises will fall by 1.6%, and the export volume of small enterprises may fall by 3.2%.
The report says that the development of standards and rules is considered part of the non-tariff management measures in international trade, and it is essential to protect consumer interests and maintain social and environmental sustainability. Compared with large enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises and low-efficiency enterprises need to pay more to meet the relevant standards and rules. Only policy makers and business managers can work together to reduce the cost of meeting standards, in order to increase the competitiveness of SMEs and create a business environment with more market opportunities for developing countries participating in international trade.
In addition, through analysis of the development potential of SMEs in various regions of the world, the report points out that SMEs in the Asia-Pacific region still have unexplored potential in the field of IT and consumer electronics; the potential of SMEs in the Middle East and North Africa is concentrated in fresh In the food and processed food sector, in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, metals and basic manufacturing are the potential of SMEs.
Since 2015, the International Trade Center has published the annual report on SME Competitiveness Outlook, which analyzes the challenges faced by SMEs and provides guidance on how the government can tap the development potential of local SMEs.
