ASCOT, England, May 21, 2008 -- Micromachined Diamond, conducted by Element Six Ltd researchers and in collaboration with the Institute of Photonics (IoP) at the University of Strathclyde The Device Initiative (MIDDI) was successfully completed. MIDDI is funded in part by the UK Department of Trade and Industry to develop the world's leading diamond microelectronics manufacturing technology, giving European companies a competitive edge over Japanese and US companies.

MIDDI focuses on the development of a “toolbox” with advanced micro-nano manufacturing technology based on synthetic single crystal diamond for the development of next-generation high-frequency, high-power electronic devices. Element Six is a world leader in the manufacture of electronic grade synthetic diamonds using chemical vapor deposition. MIDDI has further expanded this lead.

The University of Strathclyde IoP has been playing a role in providing plasma etching expertise that is used to define the precise surface features required for device fabrication. Founded in 1995, the Institute has become a specialized technical center for etching materials, and etching materials are difficult to process. Expertise in materials has contributed to IoP's success in semiconductor optoelectronics, solid state laser engineering and biophotonics.

Professor IdP Deputy Director Martin Dawson commented: “The MIDDI project demonstrates how UK universities collaborate with industry and successfully develop technology. Element Six designed the project's mission to provide controlled doping for advanced diamond structures. Characteristics; the school accomplishes its mission by developing an innovative dry etching method that is jointly patented by both parties. This truly opens the door to the production of diamond electronics and broadens the range of new technologies (including diamond photonics). Applications, with the support of Element Six, the University of Strathclyde now has an extraordinary influence in this area."

Achievements in three areas
The project has achieved significant results in three areas, which will help Element Six support the development of active electronic devices made with diamonds. First, the synthesis and processing techniques used in the production of substrates and epitaxial layers with atomic low roughness surfaces have been improved. The ability to fabricate high precision diamond nanolayers depends on a complex set of processing and synthesis steps. For a high frequency active electronic device, some individual nanolayers require a thickness of a few nanometers. In addition, these nanolayers require atomic smoothness and extremely precise impurity distribution.

Second, Element Six is now able to store thin layers of boron-doped diamond in nanometer thickness. The concept of active switching devices based on diamonds such as delta MESFETs uses these thin layers sandwiched between two original diamond layers that are not doped with other materials to support transistor action. In the end, MIDDI came up with a renewable, comprehensive etch technology for transistor device manufacturing.

Christopher Ogilvie Thompson, Business Business Manager at Element Six, stated: "These successful results have laid the foundation for the formation of a new Element Six subsidiary. Diamond Microwave Devices Ltd is dedicated to the development of the world's first commercial high-frequency, high-power diamond transistor. The technology developed by MIDDI will also benefit other diamond technologies used in advanced applications such as radiation detectors and micro-optics.

Introduction to the Institute of Photonics
Founded in 1995, the Institute of Photonics is a business-centric research organization affiliated with the University of Strathclyde. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between academic research and the application and development of the photonics industry. The organization's research interests include semiconductor materials and equipment, practical all-solid-state lasers, miniature LED arrays, and a wide range of applications, especially in the field of photonics. The Institute of Photonics is headquartered at Glasgow City Campus on the University of Strathclyde. IoP undertakes contracts from the industrial sector, conducts collaborative research, and provides consulting services. The institution has a large number of PhDs and engineering Ph.D. students, and is licensed for corporate technology.
