U.S.: Thin Film Silicon Solar Cell Efficiency Expected to Increase by 10%

Solar PV Thermal System (PVT) refers to the photovoltaic system that uses solar photovoltaic cells to convert solar energy directly into electrical energy. But so far, compared with stand-alone solar collectors, their heat production capacity is slightly inferior. That's because they need to operate at low temperatures to cool crystalline silicon solar cells. This will make silicon generate more electricity, but the heat collection capacity is not good enough.

As a result, PVT faces two problems. First, compared to it, a good solar hot water system can capture more energy at a lower cost. In addition, it will occupy all the space of the roof, making the application of heat almost without a cone. In view of this, the research team led by Joshua Pierce, assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Michigan Technological University, used different silicon to create a better PVT to solve the above problems.

Pearth explained that at present, most solar panels are made of crystalline silicon, but in fact, scientists can use amorphous silicon (usually thin-film silicon) to make solar cells. Thin-film silicon may have less power, but they are lighter, more flexible, cheaper, and energy-efficient. However, since the amorphous silicon material generates a defect under a strong light ray and causes a drop in the current (a so-called photo-induced attenuation effect), the problem of unstable power supply occurs. Therefore, at present, thin film solar cells occupy very little market share.

However, Pierce's team found that photo-induced attenuation can be overcome by incorporating thin-film silicon into a new PVT. Peirth pointed out that before manufacturing the new system, we do not need to cool the thin film silicon; moreover, by heating it to the solar-thermal operating temperature (close to the boiling point of water), this thin film silicon can be used to make it thicker and overcome it.
